Don't go 600 then 1500...you'll be left with all sorts of a mess.
What year car? Any pics? If you go 600 then go 1000 then 1500 then 2000 and then polish. You will need a orbital or rotary polisher though.

Andrews got the best solution, but for me, a good claw hammer (bust them up) and then buy new lenses.
I know this is why my wife tells me I have no friends.

its a 2002 passat... sorry i dont have pics right now... all i can say is that when you run your fingers over the headlight you can feel all of the oxidization.

If it's 2002 you can probably get away with starting at 2000 grit and just polishing after that. I think I should add a headlight restoration service to my business...

haha, well if the fade on the lights was bad you could start with wet 600 and go down. you could also remove markings that way fast.
I do tinted taillights, thats about it tough. and thats the only time ive sanded lights.

i detail cars and i use this: i found out that, wet sanding and buffing the headlights is not good for the plastic.

Wetsanding/buffing plastic is perfectly fine. As with anything, moderation is key.

heres my lights after the wet sanding, and buffing, they look hazy in the pic for some reason , must be the cloud cover, they look 100X better in person.
