"Life is better in a BMW"

« on: January 20, 2008, 08:55:47 PM »

I have several projects that I would love to get done in the month of March. I will be doing Springs Shocks Sway Bars Control Arms and lots of bits of rubber. I am unfortunately very limited on driveway and garage space. I was wondering if anyone knew anyone that likes to get their hands dirty and has room in a garage while the car was being worked on. So for those that may want to work on an E30 and have the extra room I would be very willing to work something out for compensation.

Thanks

I would be willing, and I have an E30 too - but I live far far away from you, and my time is very limited, pretty much Sunday's only.

I work downtown Chicago so distance is not an issue and weekends "Sundays" will be my day to work on the car. I have a children, and a wife that would kill me if I spent every waking hour on this car. She already thinks I am crazy for buying it.

I live in Elgin, which is probably an hour and a half away from downtown - and I have a wife and 3 kids, so I know.

Shoot me an email - maybe we can make this a mini gtg/mod day!

Talk to Adam, LSixer, he has a heated garage and would probably be willing to let you use it sometime.

Yes, its really heated, I wished I had Shorts and a T-Shirt last time I was there.

I would be willing to lend a hand.  LSixer (Adam) has the best garage for winter work.

Give me some details. When in March, what you'll need approx how long you need the space, etc ...

If we can, lets poll the group to see who may be interested in coming by to help out.

I have no idea how long it takes to do the jobs I want to get done. I have been researching the hell out them but I have never done suspension work before so it would take me longer to get things done.

The jobs I want to do all can be done at once.

Front

1. replace control arms and bushings.
2. replace tie rods.
3. replace struts and spring with lowering springs and sport struts.
4. replace front sway bar and links.

Rear

5. replace springs and shocks with lowering springs and sport shocks.
6. replace trailing arm bushings with urathane bushings. could be a pain but i have a good write up on it.
7. replace subframe bushings with urathane bushings. This is a pain and probably the biggest job on the list.
8. replace rear sway bar and mount sway bar reinforcement tabs. welding is required for this one.

if I have the cash I also would like to install a new catback exhaust while I have the car on jack stands. Also the exhaust will need to be dropped anyways for some of the jobs listed above.

The idea is to get this all done before the end of March and to have it ready for spring. I want to put it in paint in April but again it depends on cash. The shop told me 3 weeks in paint which makes it ready about the time I can start enjoying top down weather.

I am waiting my a bonus from work that gets paid out at the end of Feburary so I figure I am ready to start the second weekend of March. Can someone give me an idea of what kind of hours I am talking about for these jobs? I think the front is going to be pretty straight forward and should only take a day but I could be wrong. This car has spend its entire life out in Vegas so I am hoping that the lack of rust will make thing go smother.

Well, thats quite a list.

For your questions on what would it take, we need to contact several of our members here. In my opinion, the three to question are:

Jason - Jay::01-s4
Tom - cousingrandpa
John - JVC

Fortunately, these three are VERY helpful as they all three were at the last mod-meet.

If you need the garage space for an extended period, thats fine, I have one bay that I can offer for the length of time needed. One bay is permately assigned to the six and it is very jealous of its space.

I have some tools, but, I suspect what I have will not complete all of what you are looking for. If I may make a suggestion, based upon what our three members say (see above) (and others by any means, I am not singling these guys out as the ONLY ones, I just happen to know of their skills, there are others I am sure) have to say, you should break these projects into different groups. That is, do a couple of things, then we can schedule some time for others. Just a suggestion.

PM those guys with this thread short cut and have them chime in.

I smell another mod day!!!

If I don't have work I'm in. I'd just need a 3 week advance on what day it is going to take place (or days for that matter) then I'll be in for helping. I don't know everything, but I'm pretty handy with following instruction or visual reference. You're gonna want Tom there to do anything that me and another high schooler cant do, aka loosen a nut, loosen a WAY overtightened wheel stud etc.

Just keep me informed as to when it would be and I think we could rock another mod day sometime soon.

Well it looks like the project is on hold. I was part of a group buy on r3vlimited.com that looks like it may have gone south. The guy has gone MIA with several thousand dollars worth of peoples money. It seems like he may have done the same thing over on e30tech.com as well for three other group buys also. I have filed a claim with paypal and will contact my Credit Card company in the morning so I hope to recover my money at somepoint. I would llike to thank all of you that volunteered on the E30 project at the drop of a hat. I guess that really shows how tight knit this site is and how good of you guys are. I will update you all on the status when I know more.

Wow that really sucks.  I hope someone catches whoever is responsible.
Good luck with PayPal.  I hope you can get your money back.
