Okay, so I am considering a new project/tinkerer to pick up in the next few months and I have always been drawn to the idea of an old golf/rabbit. I would love to find an old GTI to pick up and start cleaning up and rebuilding for fun. Who has an suggestions or experience in the field that could get me started in the right direction? I know that these are quite different from my earlier euro indoctrination so I want to get started right by not buying the wrong thing to start with.

if you can find a decent MK1, GET IT!!! they are very hard to find,i was looking to get one for a long time... i gave up because they are usually very rusty and beat up, otherwise an MK2 is cool too, im searching for one of those too... i cant find one in good condition though yup... still searching...

well that's somewhat disheartening to hear starting out. Oh well, I think it will be worth the wait if I can find one.

So what are the little areas that are model specific I should check out when I go to see this car this weekend? I know to check for the rusty spots and general wear and tear items, just what are common problems on that era gti.
