The Covini C6W (short for Covini 6 Wheeler) is an Italian two-seat, two-door supercar with a removable roof section. The vehicle was first conceived more than 30 years ago by Ferruccio Covini but was later ditched until the late 1980s. With the development of new hydro-pneumatic suspension technology, Covini was able to design the front four-wheel section to suit different driving conditions, however the project was delayed once again due to high development costs.

Then, in 2004, Covini rolled out the first completed prototype at the Geneva Motor Show, promising to put the car into production. Unfortunately, since its debut nothing has been seen or heard of the Covini C6W. That has all changed with AutoWeek reporting that the oddly-designed supercar is headed for limited production next year.

The benefits of the six-wheel system, according to Covini, is that the vehicle is protected if one of the front wheels is deflated, has extra braking capacity thanks to four individual brake units up front plus two in the back, less chance of aquaplaning, increased grip and a more comfortable ride.

The production version is expected to sport the same Audi-sourced 4.2L V8 engine as the prototype. Final numbers should read 380hp (260kW) and 331lb-ft (450Nm), with drive going to the rear wheels via a six-manual gearbox. The C6W features a steel tubular chassis with carbon fiber reinforcements and structural parts. The four front wheels measure 16in, while the rear pair measure in at 20in.

Covini claims the C6W weighs in at just 1,150kg and is capable of reach speeds in excess of 300km/h.

You know what would make this car even better? You see where it has that second set of front wheels...ok, picture this...GET RID OF THE DAMN THINGS!!!

This is worst idea I've ever seen since the Pontiac Aztec. Ugly as hell.

well, the six wheel theory worked well for the Tyrell P34 F1 car:

the body of the new car is just ugly, keep the six wheels... change the body.

6 wheels = more friction

also that much more weight

also it's going to have a decreased steering radius otherwise the tires will "hop" because they are turning on a different circle at sharp angles. I see it being very problematic.

In times when everyone is all about fuel economy they add 2 more wheels ( and thus friction ) to a car. It looks unnatural, it's like a spider vs. a bug. Spiders tend to freak people out because they have 8 leggs rather then 6 ( National geographic ).

Could 2 extra wheels up front realy improve the handeling of the car?

what fuel economy crisis? last time i checked, fuel was down lower than it has ever been in the past 5 years.

the contact patch is the surface area where the tire meets the road. if there's more surface area touching the road, there's more grip. now just think of 2-times that compared to a regular 4-wheeled car.

anybody else notice the masking taped on license plate? lmao

anyway....

hopefully by the time it reaches the beginning of the assembly line that it'll of recieved tweeks to the exterior. the car you're looking at was built back in 2004.

the car would of been better if it was full 6WD.

Not seeing the tape brother. I think it looks good thoug, to me anyway. I like unusal cars, and this one at the moment sure fits that category. I would be interested to see what the final product is when it hits production, in terms of style changes.

The oil price isn't going to stay down and even if it's low now that doesn't take away that every constructor ( short of the exotics ) is doing all it can to get the fuel efficiency up.

In case of interest, petrol is at about 0.95EUR/liter here.

Thats cause they realise we are going to run out of oil soon if we don't get that fuel effeciency up or find ways to use alterantive energy... It's in their best interest to make cars more fuel effecient because the more fuel efficcient they are, in the long run the longer a company can stay in buisness without having to think about fuel cells and all other energy sources.

They will have come up with an alternative powersource years before we run out of oil. The fuel efficiency's intention is just the same as all the rest. To sell cars, make profit.

Im not disagreeing there, but, I believe its more correct to say that its in their best interest to make cars that people want to buy. Basic common sense. If you make great cars that are highly effecient, yet, no one buys them, your screwed. The were not wrong for making a TON of SUVs these last few years. EVERYONE wanted one, consequently, they sold well. Thats a profitable business model. What the hell is wrong with that? GM is in business to make money, not provide a public service.

Seg-way to the current car bailout. We are looking to hand them billions and then micro-manage the companies to make cars that we (they) are not completly sure anyone is going to want. Wheres the proof that if GM rolls out the volt next week that it will immediately sell like hotcakes? I wouldnt buy one, not now, not next year, not the year after.

If gas hits $10 a gallon, I'll still drive my TT. It goes like a rocket and gets great gas mileage. The bimmer isnt even an issue. It almost never sees the road.
