Just thought I'd post these poignant question(s) :

If you were to buy say an 09 Dodge Viper from the stealership today, and tomorrow Chryco files for receivership/bankruptcy :

1) Would u still have to keep shelling out monthly payments ?
2) Would spare parts/service be available down the road ?
3) Would your warranty still be honoured & by whom ?

Lots of "depends on" here for me.

First, if I HAD the money to go out and buy a new viper (as in my case, no wife, no kids, etc ...) the answer would be a flat no. Logic. I would expect that when I buy a high end car like that, I want regular maintenace down on it from an authorized dealer trained mechanic. Also, I want warranty work done and paid for by the same mechanic. No company, no licensed authorized mechanic, and no warranty work. Thats my assumption anyway.

If I were in my current situation srs expenses due to kids, wife, etc ... I may be inclined to buy a older/late model car and therefore not have the same concerns about warranty work. I would be inclined to do some of the work on the car myself, so, its not as much of an inknown if the car company goes under.

I think the payments would still need to be made. Even in bankruptcy, the financial arm would still be functioning under protection, I would be a stretch to think you could skate on your bills.

I think its yes to all 3... I believe the parts for a car have to be available for sale 10years after production ends....Not sure by whom the warranty be honored by, bu i am sure it would be.

Are you planning on buying a Viper? Grin

Bankruptcy depending on which chapter it is really only means restructuring and a greater grace period to pay off lenders. So while you buy your Viper now, you will still be paying for it until its paid off. You and anyone else who was under lease or under car payments would still pay the same rate until it is completely paid off. So no freebies there. Warranty wise, the company would shut down some but not all service centers, so you would still be able to get her serviced in a timely manner. However, they might try to contract a 3rd party warranty ensurer and service company to do the same work. Parts would still be available because they would still be producing parts. Of course availability would probably be throttled back, but I think to keep the buyers loyal they would try to get another 3rd party manufacturer to take over for some of the production.

So I think people are thinking that Bankruptcy is "the end" of a company. Its just a scary term for restructuring and refinancing of a large company. Buy your Viper, if you can, and don't worry about the rest. But I will add this, considering the Viper itself is more of a niche car, I wouldn't be surprised they have their own division of parts producers and I am sure many other manufacturers non-Mopar make replacement OEM parts.
