I figured a BMW based forum would be a decent place to ask this question.

I keep hearing that BMW's, and M-cars in general are pretty expensive to maintain...but how expensive?

I was planning on getting an E36 M3 (probably with the S52...and more probably a 99) and I was wondering if anyone has owned one and could tell me about how much it actually cost to maintain?

Well Thomas, there are several e36 owners here, not sure when they will post up, hopefully soon. You may want to formulate some more specific questions in order to get a more complete picture though. If I were to offer any advice, it would be to visit here:

There are an enormous amount of people here who have a lot of combined talent. If I was considering the car you are looking for, I would dig through these forums.

If you want, I can float some specific questions on the BMWCCA message board. You need to be a member before accesssing it, but, I can be the conduit if needed.
