Floridian stuck in the snow!

My first attempt at single strobe, multiple flash, long exposure, night photography. Find the darkest place you can (unfortunately that was the darkest place I could find) and set the camera in "Manual" mode. Your aperture will vary due to how dark of a place you can find, the darker the place the higher the F stop. Set the shutter speed to the longest setting you can, or long enough for you to make a lap around your car. I have a wireless remote release and can keep the shutter open as long as I want, this seems to work the best. Obviously you're going to want a really sturdy tripod to minimize vibration, and prevent blurring the image. Shoot with a low ISO and in RAW mode if possible. Unfortunately I didn't realize I was not shooting in RAW until I got home, oh well, I was just giving this a test run anyway. Then, while the shutter is open, just walk around the car popping the flash. For lighter colored cars, having your flash set to 1/64 is fine. But for darker cars you'll probably have to bump it up to 1/32 or higher. The object of shooting like this is to get the image of shooting with a multiple flash setup, while only using one small speedlight. No need to lug around flash stands, power supplies, or huge studio lights. So here's my first shot at this, I still have a lot of practice to do to get this right. This was a 43 second exposure.

Nice Jon By the way, congratulations. You just made moderator of the member pictures section. Feel free to start a tools and tricks thread. I would encourage all of our photographers to start their own threads of their photography (even if you think you suck) That way we can all learn from each other.

I just made the big leap to Digital SLR last month. I've been really big into photography for years, but recently decided it's what I want to do when I retire. I'll help out in any way I can. I'm currently shooting with a Nikon D300. I have two lenses, the 18-55VR and 70-300VR. One speedlight, the SB-600. And a few light modifiers, umbrellas and such. If anyone has any questions just post 'em up and I'll help as best as I can.

HA!!! I didn't even look at the previous post. I got confused somewhere. You name a time and place, and as long as I don't have to work I'll do it. That goes for anyone here. I love to shoot and need all the practice I can get.

Nice shot... are you planning on keeping the MS3 stock or do you have any mods planned?

Little things here and there. Taking it home to Florida this summer to get the windows tinted. May do a few visual mods, but I don't plan on touching the engine in a major way. Maybe an intake, diverter, possibly front mount IC. That's probably all I'd do to the engine. The thing is plenty fast as it is. Plus, it's my daily driver.

Lots of dark out here Jon Yeah. The darker the better, from what I've heard. Keep in mind, this is the first shot like this I have ever taken. And from what I'm told, black cars are the hardest to shoot in this manner. Just the mere fact that my car came out recognizable made me happy! I'm trying to learn as much about this as soon as possible so that when the weather gets really nice, I can do some mass shoots. If I have time off, and anyone wants their car to be a test subject, I'm down for shooting whenever. I do remember it being pretty dark out your way though. If you know of some good places out there and want some shots of the cars, let me know. I'd love to get out and shoot whenever you have time.

its not terribly underexposed... the tire tread is clearly visible in the wheel well- the hardest place to catch light on a car.

intake and downpipe is all you need. i had my speed3 at 325/315 with a intake, dp, fmic, raise the boost just a tad, and a flash.
