Floridian stuck in the snow!

« on: May 04, 2009, 04:29:02 AM »

Took a trip to the Chicago Botanical Gardens yesterday and took advantage of the nice weather. It's finally getting warm enough for my Floridian blood to thaw out up here! Enjoy.

Nah, I  can appreciate his taste for seeing what would make a good image, but his camera makes all the difference.

Actually, it's the other way around. This is an all to common misconception when it comes to photography, or any other form of art. The camera is just a tool, an instrument. If you don't have the understanding of how to properly and creatively use that tool then it will take the same quality of images you can get with a $200 point and shoot digital. That's like saying that Hendrix was only as good as he was because he played a Fender Strat. I've seen images that come from a $50 camera that have graced the covers of magazines, and I've seen images that have come from an $8000 Nikon D3X using a $1700 lens that looked like they came from a Poloroid. Granted, there are many things you can do with an expensive DSLR that you can't do with an every day point and shoot. But one thing I have never seen listed in the "Features" list on the box of a camera is, "Will take Professional Quality images no matter what your skill level."

It all depends about context in the image. However, if I had an 8,000 camera, you bet your ass my images would look better than a $100 camera.

I know that it takes skill to learn your camera's features. And like I said, you can see what will make a good image, but if you didn't have your camera, it wouldn't nearly be as stunning.

But that is just my opinion.

There you go, you said it, its your OPINION!! In all honesty that is soooo not true. You tell that to Joe McNally, and he would deck you in the face. Anyone can learn to work a camera, but if you don't have the eye for taking pictures, you will not get the same results.

If you looked at some of Jon's pictures with a point and shoot, you wouldn't be saying the same thing.

I also know people who have a smaller D40 and take pictures with that, and  you couldn't tell if it was a D3x.
Its not about the equipment, its the eye.
