Did this once before, by the time I hit 3/4 tank gone I couldn't take upshifting at 2000rpm and not going over 3200rpm in 5th and blew the last 1/4 tank driving the Golf like it was my Mini.

So here goes again. My car isn't in perfect running order and I am on shit tires so I don't expect to hit 900 miles this tank.

Baseline odometer reading with a full tank (vented and filled to max capacity) Wednesday morning 5/6/09.

14.5 gallons to auto shut off.

But when I did the 675 mile tank it was 15.1 gallons to put it back to where I started and I still had some reserve (not enough to get to the next station with diesel though)

upshifts at 2000 rpm and no faster than 80 on the highway. Peak torque is at 1900rpm so no point in revving higher than 2g before upshifts. no engine braking either. On surface streets just trying to time the lights to not come to a full stop without being that guy doing 30 in a 45 for 1/2 mile because the light is red 3/4 mile ahead.

ok haven't updated since about half a tank.

Finished off the tank tonight on the way home (had maybe 12 miles more in the tank but didn't have the diesel stations in the right spots to push it)

I am doing this again with this tank with a lot more attention to economy - drafting semis, not going over 2000rpm (60mph in 5th). Not going to update as many photos though.

I think there are pictures in between the above and this on another camera.

fuel light came on and as usual startled me.

got to work

chicken out point

fuel into the tank:

and it begins again-updates at 1/4 tank intervals:
