uh its not confirmed just yet. they're in "advanced" talks. and the sale won't final until Q3, which is a LONG way away from right now. this Chinese company could change their mind in between.

also, with this deal, they're securing more than 3,000 jobs within factories, R&D, and dealerships. so that basically means GM made a deal with them so they can still use the GM truck factories to build the H2, H3, and the now upcoming H4. so they're still going to be built in America, by Americans, and bought by (you guessed it) Americans.

ok, but that won't make it a Chinese manufacturer. it'll still be an American manufacturer. gotta remember, China is the largest industrial country in the world. so they must be doing something right, even if they do build shitty cars.

Yeah, but the sheer thought of one of America's strongest symbols of power is now owned by the Chinese doesn't sit well with me.

I have no problem with them succeeding, its the big picture I am talking about.

Official: Penske agrees to purchase Saturn
Source: AutoBlog
Quote
Confirming a report we posted on earlier today, General Motors has reached a preliminary agreement to handover the Saturn marque to the Penske Automotive Group. In GM's official statement, the automaker says that the memorandum of understanding would entitle Penske to the brand's 350+ dealerships, the rights to the name and its associated iconography, as well as continued production of the Aura, Vue, and Outlook on a contract basis. As expected, the dormant Astra hatchback and the rakish Sky roadster will apparently not make the transition. No financial terms of the deal have been released.

As reported earlier today by The New York Times, that abbreviated Saturn lineup will likely be joined by vehicles procured from other overseas automakers, potentially Renault's Samsung Motors division in Korea. It is not immediately clear if Penske will use the opportunity to pair existing Saturn stores with the company's other automotive distribution channel, Smart.

According to GM, the agreement is expected to be consummated in the third quarter of this year, pending the necessary paperwork shuffling between the two companies and the federal government.

YES!.....NO!

i'm happy to hear an American company buying Saturn, but i'm saddened to see the Sky go. i can understand why though.....

Kappa = in limbo

this is what would happen if Penske were to keep the Sky around:

Sky - Penske
Solstice - monkey in the middle
Opel GT - Magna?
Daewoo G2X - ...?

GM would still have to shell out money to build the Kappa platform and THEN share it with different companies.

[rant]
Only by merit of having the largest population. Not just their cars are shit. All of their product is shit. They use garbage steel in everything they make. My brother in law works in tool and die and the chinese cutting tools his company buys need to be changed before jobs are done so the guys buy their own American and German cutting tools.  Plus they dump tons of pollutants into the environment because they don't give a shit or have anyone to answer to. That has the effect of making the dope smoking hippie liberals despise me and my penchant for burning gas in my driving enjoyment even while they love the Commie bastards causing the real problems. I mean their last dumbass in chief gave China most favored nation trade status and that got us what? lead filled toys? Now we have their new savior in chief mortgaging two generations into the future to them to pay for companies that should have just folded and THE CHINESE are CONCERNED we won't be able to sustain the debt.

Koenigsegg signs letter of intent to purchase Saab
Source: Motor Authority
Quote
The ongoing tale of Saab's sale may be drawing to a close, as early reports out of Sweden today have General Motors and Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg, along with a group of Norwegian investors, agreeing to the deal in a letter of intent. GM confirmed in its February viability plan that it would no longer supply Saab with funding and that the Swedish company would become an independent business as of January 1, 2010.

An official announcement of the sale is expected any day now, with insiders saying the outside window is two weeks. In its own turnaround plan presented to creditors, the company revealed that it is seeking to write-off roughly three quarters of its non-prioritized debt, aiming for positive cashflow by 2011. If the decision to sell to the Koenigsegg-led group goes through, don't expect final details to emerge for another month or more, however, as final negotiations on the details of the deal still have to be hammered out. The reports of the deal with Koenigsegg originate with a Swedish TV report citing unnamed sources, however, so nothing is official yet.

Saab spokeswoman, Gunilla Gustavs, has previously revealed to Automotive News that there were three remaining bidders left for the company and the sale process would continue despite GM’s bankruptcy. This figure is down from the previous 20 suitors, and the list of remaining bidders is known to include Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg, Ira Rennert' U.S.-based Renco Group and as revealed Wednesday by Financial Times, a group of investors from Wyoming called Merbanco. Little is known about the new bidder's intentions or what sort of offers each has made for Saab.

Saab CEO Jan-Ake Jonsson's said on June 3rd to Swedish paper Dagens Industri, "Now we are negotiating with just two parties." That indicates that Merbanco may never have been a serious contender. But whatever the number of bidders, or who they are, Saab has been in need of cash to keep operating in both the short and long terms.

Thanks to 28 billion Swedish kronor ($3.23 billion) in loans and loan guarantees from the Swedish government, plus help from private investors, Saab will be able to operate as usual for the foreseeable future but the company is still predicting a loss of more than $300 million for the current year. Saab lost about $340 million in 2008, according to documents filed with the Swedish court that granted the company a stay of execution.

The injection of funding will be used to help launch three new models over the next 18 months and hopefully see the company become an innovator of technology like it had been in the past. Some important automotive technologies pioneered by Saab include headlamp wipers and washers, impact-absorbing bumpers, wastegate-operated turbocharger systems, and one of the world’s first 16-valve turbocharged engines.

The three new models planned include the recently revealed 9-3X as well as the new 9-4X and 9-5, all of which are desperately needed. Last year Saab saw its global sales drop 25.5% to just 93,338 units and 2009 is expected to be even lower.

Chevy Camaro ON DEMAND!
Source: AutoBlog
Quote
You want a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro? You'd better come strong with more money than the MSRP requires, and you'd better be willing to wait. Bloomberg is reporting that General Motors can't build the reborn bow tie pony car fast enough to quench public demand. That's excellent news for a company that needs a reason to smile, and it could be even better for dealers donning the bow tie. After all, car sales are still firmly in the tank, and GM has seen more than its fair share of shrunken demand.

Dealers have already booked about 25,000 orders for the Camaro, yet only half have been delivered to date. Analysts reportedly told Bloomberg that dealers are getting $500 over sticker on average, too, and at least one dealer is guessing that he won't have a Camaro to sell in stock for at least a year. Bartow Chevrolet in Florida sold its first two Camaros at MSRP, and he's already booked 18 orders.

There is no question that the Camaro has grabbed the attention of the car-buying public, and the debut of Transformers 2 will likely give the pony car another marketing shot in the arm. GM sold 5,463 copies of the Camaro in May, and we're guessing that number will grow as production ramps up.
