The Chevrolet Beat has been paraded around the last several auto shows as the forerunner to the production Spark hatchback revealed at March’s Geneva Motor Show, to sit just below the Aveo as Chevy's smallest car. Now spy photos of a Spark-styled but slightly larger vehicle have been captured as it undergoes testing at Germany’s notorious Nurburgring circuit and is thought to be the next-generation Aveo.

Chevrolet badges are clearly seen underneath stickers on the wheels, leaving little doubt as to its brand identity, and given Chevrolet's lineup, the place for a car slightly bigger than the Spark is where the Aveo currently sits. The 2009 Aveo just began North American production in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, in August of last year, but GM could already be working on a replacement.

The car spotted definitely shares traits with the Spark, possibly reflecting a next-generation styling direction for Chevrolet's small global cars. The stacked double-circle tail lights, rear hatch/spoiler area and sloping roof line are all very similar between the two.

Character lines along the side of the car in the spy shots are different from the spark, however, indicating its size difference and possible helping to differentiate the two stylistically. The headlights are also different, with two side-by-side circular lamps instead of the Spark's giant tear-drop shaped unit.

The interior of the car spotted is very nearly identical to the Spark, however, especially around the instrument panel and center stack area, again possibly reflecting a new interior brand identity.

Whatever the new car's name and eventual role may be, it's clear Chevrolet has something in the works, though it's not likely to hit the streets until 2010 at the earliest.

this looks to be better than the previous Daewoo Aveos. from what i can see, it also looks alot better. why name it the Aveo though? the Aveo has recieved Geo Metro status and is the buttend of every joke relating to cars. if it is alot better, then why put it with that reputation? Chevy, if it is alot better, then you are making a HUGE mistake.

c'mon, Adam. i know you fail at reading sometimes, but not this bad. the PREVIOUS Aveo was a Daewoo with a Chevy badge, not this one. this is going to be an all-new Aveo.

I thought the new Spark was going to replace the Aveo?

Well, there goes Chevy, building too many models. Again.

the new Spark is going to be slotted BELOW the new Aveo. Chevy really isn't making too many models, they're just getting ready for future buyers who want 35+mpg out of a tiny car. what better way to bring yourself out of the Chapter 11 hole than to start putting out small sub-compacts that are appealing to the public?

my prediction: the Volt will fall flat on its face while the new Aveo, Spark, Cruze, and Malibu Hybrid sell like hotcakes.

i asked this on another board....

why can't manufacturers just build regular hybrids based on already produced cars instead of building hybrid-focused cars like the Prius, Insight, and Volt? i mean seriously, the new 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid went 1400+ miles on one tank.

Yeah, but hypermilers in existing hybrids could probably pull that off too. Oh, and the Malibu is a sh*tty hybrid. The sh*ttiest you can get.

I just think that they need to build just the Volt, Spark, and Cruze. And concentrate their abilities to build quality, and I mean QUALITY econoboxes like Honda and Mazda have been doing. Adding another car to the lineup just makes no sense to me. Especially if its just going to be marginally larger. Its like the Spark is the Tahoe and the Cruze is the Suburban. Roll Eyes

the Cruze isn't marginally larger than the Spark. the Spark is a SUB-compact with the upcoming Aveo. the Cruze is much, MUCH larger than its predecessor, the Cobalt. there's a BIG difference in size between the Cruze, Aveo, and Spark. the Aveo is going to be the size of the Fit, Versa, Yaris, and Fiesta. what Chevy is doing is they're bringing the city cars to us. city cars are much more smaller than your typical sub-compacts. the Toyota/Scion iQ is an example of this.

That doesn't sound like a "BIG difference", as you put it.

i'd wait for both cars to come out to see this big difference, not read some speculation from Motor Authority. considering MA is somewhat inaccurate, i wouldn't really trust this source.
