also they say if you have no chance of avoiding them dont swurve, drive right at them... i believe it's because you have a better chance of surviving if you hit the deer, instead of driving off the road.
This is also for insurance purposes. The insurance covers a claim if you hit a deer, but not if you randomly drive off the road and hit a tree or something. At least thats what my dad said, and he was an insurance agent for 13 years up in MN. We had people hitting moose sometimes up there!
