This is a great topic of discussion!

How do you spell?

When you are typing a letter or on the boards here, or in an email to a friend or co-worker - how do you spell?

Do you type the same way you speak to people, or do you use slang in both speaking and typing?

The simple fact of the matter is that whatever you type on a forum, or in the shoutbox, is a reflection of the person that you are and have become. I attempt to spell correctly as well as word my sentences in proper structure - not to mention my punctuation - because it was partly the way I was brought up, and I like it when people think I am intelligent.

Now, even on this board itself, I have seen people spell out a country using a lower case letter. I am not going to mention names (he knows who he is) but I am getting to know this person and I dont want to single him out, but I would like to know if it was laziness? Because I know this person, I know he is highly intelligent, and there is really no other decent excuse.

Again, in my opinion (FWIW - someday I will provide you all with a list of acronyms for all these letters) the way you type online, is a reflection of the person that you are - not that any of this matters, just curious.

And I also like to keep my post count up - lol

Thanks for reading! thumbsup

It might also be if a person is in a certain mood to, sometimes if they are tired they might not fully correct their statements, or they are a speed typer, they also might just want to get a statement in as fast as possible with no corrections.

Very good point Chris - but I have to say that pretty much all of the time, even if I am in a hurry, or tired, I still do my best, my Mother was an English major if that explains anything - lol

To my friends in person and when i speak to them on AIM i speak "slang". but when i speak to people i dont know, just met, elders, etc. i tend to speak better english. And when im on forums i speak/type good english. I understand theres some people out there that dont like slang so i wont speak it to them.

I'm like that too(most of the time), in person I speak much better than i do sometimes on AIM, on a forum i tend to speak proper except i tend to miss a punctuation mark or a mis-spelled here or there.

I think its also a personal choice that some people make.

To me, I dont mind if others speak or type or both in whatever way they want, and I will still communicate with you too, its just that for me, I like to speak the way my Mother taught me - lol

I cant spell to save my arse, or create good sentance structure.

If it wasnt for the Wordperfect version 4.1 (thats DOS version), I would have never graduated my under-grad and graduate studies.

I do not need to be good in my current profession, I am a DBA/programmer. If my spelling sucks, my code fails due to sytax errors  Grin Makes it easy.

So dont anyone be afraid to correct me, I dont mind at all. thumbsup

Adam,
It was china. I personally dislike the governmental policies of the country so I intentionally use lower case for them (and the u.n. for the same reason).
Most times I do attempt to use correct grammar but when I get on a roll sometimes the shift key gets hit a fraction of a second before it should be and whammo lowercase something (usually I). I try to correct things when I review my posts, sometimes I don't could be laziness, w/e.

i pretty much spend my life in lowercase. not out of laziness or anything - and this sounds like an excuse, but  i took architectural writing and it was hammered into our heads to have the same height/width of letters. i have been brainwashed i guess. now if i am writing a professional piece or a professional email or proofreading then i actually switch over and become all corporate. but mostly, i'm a lower case printer and typer.
